HOW TO ANALYSE FOLK SONGS?

MELODIC CHARACTERISTICS:

RANGE: MARKING THE HIGHEST AND LOWEST NOTES OF THE SONG (BETWEEN WHICH THE MELODY MOVES) WITH NUMBERS. THE LAST PITCH OF THE SONG IS ALWAYS 1 (FINALIS). NOTES ABOVE THE FINALIS HAVE TO BE INDICATED BY ARABIC NUMERALS, NOTES BELOW BY ROMAN NUMERALS. 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 VII VI V ETC.

GIVE THE WHOLE NOTES OF THE SONG FROM THE HIGHEST TO THE LOWEST WITH SOLFA SIGNS: DO’ LA SO MI RE DO LA, SO,.

SCALE: INDICATE THE SCALE USING SOLFA SYLLABLES.

IF THE SONG IS PENTATONIC, INDICATE WEATHER IS HAEMITON OR ANHAEMITON.

ANHAEMITON PENTATONITY: WITHOUT MINOR SECOND EG.: LA SO MI RE DO LA

HAEMITON PENTATONITY: WITH MINOR SECOND EG.: SO MI RE DO TI LA

IF THE MELODY HAS LESS THAN FIVE NOTES SIDE BY SIDE, THE NAME OF THE SCALE: BICHORD, TRICHORD, TETRACHORD

IF THE MELODY HAS LESS THAN FIVE NOTES WITH AT LEAS ONE JUMPING, THE NAME OF THE SCALE IS: BITONIC, TRITONIC, TETRATONIC, PENTATONIC

IF THE TONE SET GOES AT LEAST A FOURTH BELOW THE KEY-NOTE OF THE TONALITY, THEN THAT IS A PLAGAL MELODY.  

CADENCES: NUMBERS, DENOTING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FINAL NOTE OF EACH LINE AND THE FINAL NOTE OF THE LAST LINE (KEY-NOTE). THERE IS NO NEED TO INDICATE THE CADENCE OF THE LAST LINE SINCE IT IS ALWAYS 1.

FORM: MARK THE LINES BY LETTERS. SIMILARITIES BETWEEN LINES MARK BY NUMBERS IN THE UPPER INDEX. A LETTER V (AV) IN THE LOWER INDEX OF THE LETTER GIVEN FOR A LINE MEANS THAT THAT LINE IS A VARIANT OF THE ORIGINAL LINE. A LETTER K ( AK) POINTS OUT THAT THE SIMILARITY ONLY OCCURS IN THE CADENCE, AT THE END OF THE LINE.

A5: THE LINE IS HIGHER WITH A PERFECT PITCH THAN THE LINE A.

RHYTHMIC CHARACTERISTICS:

ISOPODIC: THERE ARE THE SAME NUMBER OF BARS IN EVERY LINE. IF THE NUMBER OF THE BARS ARE THE SAME IN EACH LINE, THE SONG IS ISOPODIC. IF THE NUMBER OF THE BARS IS DIFFERENT, THE SONG IS HETEROPODIC.

STYLE: IT REFERS TO LARGE GROUPS INTO WHICH SONGS CAN BE CATEGORIZED.

INDICATE HOW MANY LINES ARE IN THE SONG.

TEXT: THE TEXT OF THE FIRST LINE OF THE SONG OR THE TITLE OF THE SONG OR WHAT IS IT ABOUT. THE TEXT DETERMINES THEPERFORMING STYLE.

PERFORMING STYLE: HOW TO SING THE SONG? USE ITALIAN TERMS E. G.: ANDANTE, LARGO, TEMPO GIUSTO ETC.
